Natural vs. Synthetic Perfume Ingredients: Myths, Facts, and the Truth About What Smells Best
In the ongoing debate among consumers about whether natural or synthetic ingredients are better for use in fragrances, many fragrance lovers instinctively assume that materials of natural origin are safer and of higher quality than their synthetic counterparts. Some believe there's a distinctly “synthetic” smell common to all man-made materials. In this article, we’ll explore the natural vs. synthetic debate and ask: is natural really better?
One thing modern consumers tend to believe is that you get what you pay for. With the exception of a few niche synthetics, natural materials generally come at a higher price point. But why? Is it because they smell better? Because they come from exotic corners of the world? The real reason lies in the labor and resources involved in their production. As you might imagine, natural materials require more people to produce—farmers, pickers, transporters, and distillers all take their share before the materials even make it to an oil house. On top of that, large quantities of raw material are needed to yield a small amount of essential oil. For example, it takes about 100 grams of lavender flowers to produce just 1 gram of lavender oil—a yield of only 1%. Absolutes require even more plant matter.
But we still haven’t answered the core question: are natural or synthetic ingredients better? Let’s shift our focus to synthetics for a moment.
Contrary to popular belief, synthetic ingredients don’t all share a telltale “synthetic” smell. Each has its own distinct character, ranging from dark amber or woody notes to bright green or fruity tones. They can be intensely sweet and floral or earthy and mossy. The key difference between synthetics and naturals is complexity. A single rose essential oil can contain up to 200 different chemical compounds, while a rosy-smelling synthetic like phenyl ethyl alcohol—naturally found in rose oil—contains just one. This simplicity means synthetics often smell like just one aspect of a scent, lacking the layered depth of a full natural material.
So, do complex naturals or simple synthetics smell better? My answer: both. One thing those unfamiliar with perfumery might not realize is that synthetics are often used to bring life to naturals. When plant materials are processed into essential oils, absolutes, or concretes, some of their aromatic compounds are lost. Heat from distillation or the cold of CO₂ extraction can trigger chemical reactions or cause denaturing, dulling the character of the original plant. That’s why live flowers have a certain je ne sais quoi that their oils often lack. It’s the perfumer’s job to restore or even enhance that original scent—and we often do that with synthetics.
Synthetics can be used to “fill in the blanks” and make a fragrance smell more natural. Maybe a jasmine absolute lost some of its sweetness and sparkle—add a touch of benzyl acetate. Maybe your rose de mai is missing its honeyed softness—add a bit of phenyl ethyl alcohol. Rarely is a natural material alone enough to create a truly professional perfume. The gap is bridged with the help of synthetics.
But how does this square with the many wonderful “natural” perfumes on the market? Don’t many of them smell just as good as mainstream fragrances that don’t claim to be all-natural? In many cases, yes. But many so-called natural fragrances use isolates, which are essentially synthetics—but derived by extraction rather than synthesis. For example, both natural and synthetic linalool exist. Chemically, they are identical. The natural version is extracted from plants like lavender or rosewood, while the synthetic version is usually derived from pinene, a byproduct of logging. Which is better? In terms of smell, they’re virtually the same. Ironically, the natural version is often considered worse for the environment, given the water and fossil fuels required to grow and process the enormous volume of plants needed to produce it.
In the end, I’m not here to tell you which kind of materials you should prefer. Naturals come with an inherent complexity that can’t be replicated, while synthetics offer clarity, consistency, and control. Each has its strengths, and each has its place. It’s ultimately up to the perfumer to decide when and how to use each tool—and up to the consumer to decide what resonates with their values, style, and(maybe more importantly) their nose.
